E-the repetion of "and" and "so" emphasise the jobs the nurses are doing and how much they have to deal with. it also shows affectivly how they is a large number of them and how they are everywere.

The writer conveys to the reader that he has stopped to compose himself with the use of caesura this makes the reader gain sympathy for the writer as he demonstrates the sense of helplessness as he visits the relative.
“White cave of forgetfulness” this is a metaphor of the hospital booth that his relative is in. The use of “white cave” makes the reader feel as if the person is being engulfed by the booth.
“A withered hand” This hand has been withered it was worn away, its no longer has grand as it once was. This emphasises the authors sense of pity towards the ill person.
“into an arm wasted” gives sense to the age of the person the author the person is visiting- this showing the person is old.
“a glass fang is fixed not guzzling but giving”
“but the distance of pain that neither she nor I can cross” Although the physical distance between the two is maybe a few feet or even inches, they might as well be miles apart the author cannot connect with the person because the barrier that is being created by the pain. This of course makes the author feel helpless he does not know what he can do to help the person deal with their pain. This quote also contains the longest line in the entire poem, this may be as the form of the poem is mimicking the content.
