P: The character is forced to take the route which he did not want to take, to try and save time and arrive early for his interview. However, this only serves to cause him to detract from his objective. This can be seen in page 240.

Q: “… the bloody bridge. Aw dear. He hated having to go that way…”

E: Here Kelman, conveys to the reader the characters sense of despair by writing the passage in a style where the narrative oscillates between the 3rd person and the 2nd person. It also has connotations that if he crosses the river this will lead to a batter life from him and his wife. It is also an alliteration which emphasises the intensity of the situation; it is a sense of ‘now or never’ for the character.

Q: “… A kid’s sock dangled off one of them.”

E: This is an early connotation of the course the rest of the passage will take. It serves as an omen, or warning sign marking ‘danger’ ignored on a path.

P: The man is not motivated anymore, this could show his age as he is tired of the constant struggle that he sees his life as being. He has grown weary and has lost sight of the goals he may have had as a younger man.

Q: “… he felt like going away home…It was just a joke, the whole fucking thing…”

E: The character feels that he has been dealt a rotten hand by society. After all that the character is later revealed to have been through, he feels society (and life in general), owes him a break; that for once in his life things should go his way. However, he is unwilling to go and look for such an opportunity.
