P- The man is worried about his wife.
C- The last page.
Q- "She had to cope"
E- He worried about the wife because she never took time to grieve. He had time because he was working. This worry is shown by his repetition of "she had to".

P- The story ends on a low
C- The bottom line
Q- "He was going to die."
E- This repetitive phrase is showing an image of a man struggling with his daughter's death. His death with no one around shows that he feels he will lose his wife perhaps because of his daughters death or because he is jobless.

P- Kelman writes in swear words and slang.
C- Throughout the story
Q- "... That was the way he was going to die, he fucking knew it, it was a fucking racing certainty."
E- He does this to encourage more emotion towards the story. Although some feel he adds in too many swear words and it doesn’t create the same effect he was hoping for.

Kelman uses personal pronouns to make the story more impersonal where character development is concerned, there are also no proper nouns except for Christ and God.
"He was alone. He had to carry on now"
The pronouns make it that we do not relate to the character as an individual, but it could be anyone. This is also reflected in the non-existence of proper nouns which would give us a closer relationship with the character.
However, the grief he is suffering gives us a feeling of empathy as we all know what a death feels like.
"...and them broken like that. Their wee bodies."
Eventhough we are given do description of the man, not given his name or any personal details we still feel empathy for him. As again it could be anyone.
