P- Kelman uses the word “fuck” and its profanities too often. C- All through the story. Q- “Fucking Jesus.” “Fucking slimy.” E- The overuse of this word and its profanities leads to the word having less impact and in doing so makes the word appear out of place, it doesn’t fit in. Also in doing this Kelman adds effectiveness to the other less used cursing words, for example “cunt” and “Bastard”
P-Kelman uses the use of the brother in laws coat being too big as a form of symbolism. C-Page 241 Q-“You could have wrapped it round him twice” E- This symbolizes his inferiority to his brother in law who is successful in business and so this coat creates a sense of not being able to “fill his brother in laws shoes”.
P- The author regrets not taking his oversized jacket with him. C-Top of page 241 Q-“He really did need a coat man this was just stupid. He had one right enough he just didn’t wear the fucking thing, he didn’t like it.” E-The author never wears his coat but now he really regrets not bringing it with him on his journey. Nobody would see him in it so it wouldn’t matter.
