Although he is trying to deal with his grief, he has to mourn silently as he doesn't want to appear emasculated,

C
on page 243 we read,

Q
"...leaned his arm against it...sheilding his eyes...greeting without any sound."

E
He feels ashamed of his feelings as he feels he is losing his masculinity. He feels he has to keep his feelings hidden to appear as if he can cope with his grief.

Q
"She was stronger than him...she could handle it fine...but he couldn't"

E
This furthers the idea he feels he is losing his masculinity because he feels, as the man, he should be the one coping well with the grief. He should be the one taking care of his wife; not the other way around.

To show how grief stricken he is, he uses emotive language.

C
At the beginning of page 243, we read,

Q
"it was so fucking hard so fucking awful hard, awful hard so fucking awful hard."

E
This is an outburst of emotion because he has had to hold back his feelings for so long. Repetition of 'so fucking hard' emphasises how emotionally difficult he finds it to express his feelings.
