P
At the beginning of the page, his Mother is very reluctant to let go of her son.
C
In the fourth line of page twenty, we read:
Q
“his mother walked on in front of him”
E
This suggests she is giving him a bit of space, but still expects him to follow her: she’s still leading the way for him.
C
The fifth line also explains this;
Q
“Her other arm, swinging loose”
E
This suggests that the arm is longing of his hand to be there, where he used to be, but she knows she has to start letting go.

There are many contrasts in the short story, the first of which is immediately enforced as we begin the first page.
C
In the very first sentence of the short story we read:
Q
'wild and rocky bay...crowded beach...'
E
The juxtaposition of these two quotes immediately introduces the reader to the strong contrast between the beach- the boys safety zone, and the wild and rocky bay- a dangerous place which the boy is intrigued by.
